SUNSON researchers featured on Spanish national television for their work on solar energy storage

Before SUNSON officially kicked off, the researchers behind the project were already generating interest. In November 2022, Spanish national broadcaster RTVE featured a report on the work being carried out by researchers from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid’s Institute of Solar Energy.

The report highlighted a revolutionary approach to solar energy storage: using silicon, one of the most common materials in the Earth’s crust, to store energy from solar panels at low cost and release it on demand during peak electricity consumption periods.

Project coordinator Alejandro Datas explained the potential of silicon as a storage material, while researcher Esther López Estrada described the thermophotovoltaic cells at the heart of the technology. These cells are capable of converting heat into electricity by heating the material until it becomes incandescent.
